Defining Sin and Its Consequences
Sin is more than just a mistake; it is a direct act of rebellion against a holy God.
-
What is Sin? The biblical definition of sin is “the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4). In Greek, the word for sin is
hamartia(ἁμαρτία), which literally means “to miss the mark.” It implies failing to live up to God’s perfect, holy standard. This separation began in the Garden of Eden and has been passed down to all of humanity. As Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” -
Consequences of Sin: The consequence of sin is a spiritual death and separation from God. Because God is holy, sin cannot exist in His presence. The punishment for sin is death—not just physical, but eternal separation from the life-giving Spirit of God. Romans 6:23 states this clearly: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
